Experts called as unexploded bomb is dug up

Thursday, 19 March 2009

BOMB disposal experts were called to the building site of the new JCoSS school in East Barnet last week when an exploded World War II shell was unearthed.
East Barnet Upper School had to be evacuated and specialist bomb officers called to the site in Westbrook Crescent when the unexploded anti-aircraft device was found by construction workers at about 5.30pm on Wednesday.
Local residents were warned and then a controlled explosion was carried out, the blast reverberating around the area.
Cordons were lifted by 6pm and the area was reopened to traffic and pedestrians.
Barnet chief superintendent Stephen Kavanagh said: “This was an excellent and prompt response to a situation that caused alarm among local residents. The site was made safe at the earliest
opportunity and any danger was quickly averted.
“I would like to thank the bomb disposal officers for their prompt actions that helped to ensure that this incident was resolved with minimum distress and without any injuries or damage to buildings.”
JCoSS, which is set to open in 2010, will be the UK’s first multi-denominational Jewish school, welcoming Jews from all backgrounds. Last month Jeremy Stowe-Lindner was announced as the school’s first headteacher.
He is currently deputy headteacher at a school in Hillingdon.
Michael Phillips, the chairman of the JCoSS Trust which is responsible for the building project, said: “These types of incidents are not uncommon during major construction projects so there are clear and established procedures for dealing with them.”
