Judo club’s cash grab is winner for children
Thursday, 05 February 2009
YOUNGSTERS in Barnet are getting the chance to try out judo for the first time thanks to a government grant awarded to the Barnet Judo Club.
The club, based in New Barnet, received a £2,000 Sport Unlimited grant from the English Sports Council as well as another £3,000 from John Lyon’s Charity, which helps out young people’s groups in north west London.
Now primary and secondary schoolchildren in Barnet can go along to sessions at two local schools to try the sport for themselves.
Martin Kempson, from the club, said: “We are starting with youngsters from the age of six because judo is simple to learn but also very disciplined.
“Even if you don’t want to compete you can get a lot out of it because it’s great for fitness.
“The children who have been trying it for the first time seem to be really enjoying it – they keep coming back!”
The club currently has more than 120 members, aged between eight and 62, trained by six coaches including former British champion Simon Mazzullo.
This year, members won medals at international junior and senior level and at the London Youth Games.
Coaching sessions are held at Finchley Catholic High School, in Woodside Lane, Finchley, from 7.30–9.30pm on Tuesdays and at Lionsdown Hall, Lionsdown Road, New Barnet, on Fridays from 7.30–10.30pm.
Anyone interested in taking part should call Simon Mazzullo on 07740 781232 or visit www.barnetjudo.co.uk
