Barnet High Street has been closed in both directions following the crash

A 66-YEAR-OLD cyclist has died after she was hit by a lorry in High Barnet yesterday afternoon.

Police and ambulance were called to the junction of Wood Street and High Street at 3pm following reports of the crash.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 3pm.

Next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination at Finchley mortuary is expected to take place in due course.

The driver of the lorry, a 45-year-old man, stopped at the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of death by careless driving.

He was taken to a northwest London police station and bailed to date in December pending further inquiries.

Elderly as a description is far from the truth for such a dear friend who was a very competent cyclist. She will be sadly missed by so many friends and her lovely family.

I have an office just close by to the scene of the accident. It is of course extremely sad that this lady lost her life just going about her daily tasks. I object to you describing her as ’elderley’ as 66 is certainly not a description of an elderley person. This almost puts blame on the poor victim as unfortunately elderley is often linked to confused and careless.
