New courses: Sonique performs while SoundSkool managing director Simon Gordon looks on
BUDDING young musicians and producers in Barnet are being offered a chance to break into the industry through two new one-year music courses.
SoundSkool has teamed up with training provider DV8 to offer innovative year-long courses at Bodens Performing Arts Centre, in East Barnet Road, New Barnet in September.
The new courses were announced on Wednesday morning at a launch party featuring a performance from chart-topping singer and DJ Sonique.
For the last five years the Barnet-based, non-profit organisation has been helping young people get involved in the music industry through workshops in DJ'ing, MC'ing, singing, rapping and music production.
With funding from DV8, SoundSkool has launched two free one-year courses that will give people between 16 and 18 a stepping stone into the music profession.
Simon Gordon, founder and managing director of SoundSkool, said: “Lots of young people are into music. These courses are about giving them opportunities to gain real, recognised qualifications even if they don't have GCSEs.”
For two-and-a-half days a week, students can study either music production and business, or artist development and performance. They will meet other artists and showcase their talents, while earning a recognised level one qualification and receiving help personal development, maths and English.
“Maths and English are really important to get them into education, put them into work and to create opportunities,” said Mr Gordon.
“This is an amazing opportunity for young people to get involved in music and education.”
The courses begin in early September and applicants will have to attend an interview. For information or to enrol, contact SoundSkool or DV8 by email or telephone.
