Farrell expected to be fit for start of the British and Irish Lions’ Test series

BRITISH and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland insists that he is confident that Owen Farrell will be fit in time for Saturday’s first Test against New Zealand.

The Saracens fly-half missed the Lions’ win against the Maori All Blacks after picking up a quadriceps injury in training and there were feats that he would also be sidelined for this weekend’s crunch showdown.

But Gatland has sought to allay those concerns and is adamant that Farrell will be available for selection.

“At a pinch he probably could have played on Saturday,” he said. “I’ve always been confident about Owen being fit for the weekend. I’ve never not been confident.”

Fellow Saracens stars Mako Vunipola, Jamie George, Maro Itoje and George Kruis are all expected to be in the Lions’ match-day 23 for the first Test after being left out of the squad of tomorrow’s showdown against the Chiefs.
