Broadband in Barnet will be quick as 'lightening' following campaign by MP

Virgin Media is set to begin work in the coming weeks on an upgrade of its broadband service to homes in the High Barnet and Friern Barnet areas.

The work is part of Virgin’s £3 billion programme entitled ‘Project Lightening’ which will connect up to 40,000 homes and businesses in the areas to ultrafast broadband by the end of next year.

Progress has also been made on the upgrades to BT broadband provision in the High Barnet and Underhill areas, after local residents from The Barnet Society identified nine broadband “cabinets,” which were a priority for upgrade.

Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers, who has campaigned for faster broadband along with residents, said: “It’s been a long battle for faster broadband provision in Barnet, and one that is not over yet. I look forward to continuing to work with Virgin and with BT to ensure that these vital upgrades are delivered.”

Virgin will begin upgrade work on its High Barnet and Underhill broadband this month, with work set to begin in Friern Barnet in March. Homes are expected to begin receiving the service by the summer.
