Young gymnasts make their mark in international event

YOUNGSTERS from Hendon Gymnastics Club enjoyed some spectacular results in an international competition in Bulgaria.

The team of eight girls and 12 boys from the club, which is based at Hendon Leisure Centre, were all taking part in their first international competition, held in the city of Blagoevgrad.

The youngsters took on teams from four different countries – Macedonia, Greece, Germany and Bulgaria – with the girls competing on floor, bars, beam and vault and the boys competing on floor, rings, pommel horse, high bar, parallel bar and vault.

And some spectacular results from the squad saw them secure five individual gold medals, six individual silvers and five individual bronzes, in addition to two second-placed trophies in the team events.

The category two girls’ team enjoyed the most success, taking second place in the team event and winning two individual golds, two silvers and two bronze.

There were two golds and two silvers in the category four girls’ events and one gold in the category three girls’ events.

Among the boys, there were two silvers and bronze at category one level and two bronzes at category three level – in addition to second place in the team event.

Tulsi Bevil, Sophie O’Flaherty, Nikol Stoimenova, Miriam Merdas, Joey Heng, Sofia Garcia and Layla Merdas all won at least one medals for the girls, while the boys who picked up medals were Rory Clarke, Nimeire Mavounda, Rayane Arab, Kiyan Faridi, Varuisian Birabanathan, Aareon Ung, Stanley Nelson, Blake Eldridge and Mason Eldridge.

Victor Prodanov and Annabel Gringras performed well without quite managing to secure a medal.
